Description and comments
Asclepias
currassavica
'Red Butterfly'

Common Name: = Bloodflower (USDA).
This plant is a magnet for feeding Monarch butterfly caterpillars. It is common to observe 5 to 10 catterpillars of different sizes feeding on a patch of this milkweed. Easy to grow. It's a must have plant every year.
Begonia
boliviensis
'Bonfire'

Common Name: = Bolivian Begonia (PDN).
Exceeded our expectations. Robust plants with an unusual orange color. Worked as both a bedding plant and in a container.
Bracteantha
bracteata
'Sundaze Golden Beauty'

Common Name: = Bracted Strawflower (USDA).
So-so plant. Nice flower form and color but clumps remained small and flowers not particularly abundant..
Calibrachoa
'Perfect Red'

Common Name: = Trailing Petunia (MOBOT).
Nothing special. It was challenging to grow, grew in a very sparce habit. Flowers are small and not overly abundant. Not a gread bedding plant. Better to use in containers.
Cathranthus
roseus
'Pacifica Burgundy Halo'

(synonym: Vinca rosea)

Common Name: = Madagascar Periwinkle (USDA).
Awesome plant. Great color. Nice full growth habit. Large flowers and attractive foliage. One of our new favorites.
Geranium
'Sunrise Red'

Common Name: = Geranium.
Very dissapointing. It grew well until we planted it in the garden. Flowers are ratty and seldom do they look good enough to photograph. Routine deadheading is required. Branches die off for no apparent reason. This may be in the genus pelargonium?
Impatiens
'Blondie'

Common Name: = African Impatiens.
Interesting yellow hooded flower. Plants have not been very robust.
Impatiens
'Harmony Dark Violet'

(additional image)

Common Name: = New Guinea Impatiens.
Awesome plant. Great color. Nice full growth habit. Large flowers and attractive foliage. One of our new favorites.
Ipomoea
batatos
'Marguerite'

Common Name: = Potato Vine.
No flowers, but excellent foliage. Easy to grow. Rapidly expands to fill an area. Excellence performance. It's another must have plant every year.
Isolepis
cernus

Common Name: = Fiber Optic Grass.
Very dissapointing. It grew well until we planted it in the garden. Blades browned out and barely grew. It never looked good enough to photograph.
Nicotiana
'Red'

Common Name: = Flowering Tobacco.
Hummingbirds love this plant. Flowers are nice, but often look tired by mid day. Good growing annual, but flower color is rather dull.
Petunia
'Easy Wave Blue'

(additional image)

Common Name: = Wave Petunia.
Awesome plant. Excellent color. Rapidly spreading plant that is constantly in flower. It's another must have plant every year.
Petunia
'Summer Madness'

Common Name: = Petunia.
Awesome plant. Striking dark and light flower color. Spreading plant that produces a nice clump and is constantly in flower. Solid performer.
Petunia
'Supertunia Raspberry Blast'

Common Name: = Petunia.
Awesome plant. Excellent color. Rapidly spreading plant that is constantly in flower. It's another must have plant every year.
Petunia
'Supertunia Mini Pastel Pink'

Common Name: = Wave Petunia.
So-so plant. Flowers are small and color is washed out. Rapidly spreading plant that is constantly in flower. There are much better flower colors available. While it's a solid performer, skip over this plant and instead purchase a brilliant color.
Salvia
coccinea
'Lady In Red'

(additional image)

Common Name: = Blood Sage (USDA).
Awesome plant. Excellent color. This plant is a Hummingbird magnet. Hummingbirds are commonly seen fighting over this plant - very cool. It's another must have plant every year.
Salvia
splendens
'Crystal Blue'

Common Name: = Scarlet Sage (USDA).
Disappointing color. There is no intensity to the blue and white bi-color. Flower spikes abundant but always look half spent. Not photographable in mass. Nothing special. Better to select a more brilliant and deep solid flower color.
Senecio
cineraria
'Silver Lace'

Common Name: = Dusty Miller, Silver Ragwort (USDA).
Excellent filler plant. By itself it appears as nothing special, but when planted with other annuals it enhances their color and form. We will be using this plant more often in our annual gardens.
Tagetes
erecta
'Spun Lemon'

Common Name: = Aztec Marigold (USDA).
Totally different flower form than a typical marigold. Bright yellow color is interesting. Flowers always appear to be only half opened. Deadheading is a must.
Tagetes
patula
'Queen Sophia'

(additional image)

Common Name: = French Marigold (USDA).
Solid performer. Rapidly spreading plant that is constantly in flower. Full healthy plants with abundant flowers. Easy to deadhead.
Tagetes
'Sunburst Orange Splash'

(= T. patula x erecta)

Common Name: = Marigold.
Solid performer. Rapidly spreading plant that is constantly in flower. Full healthy plants with abundant flowers. Easy to deadhead.
Tagetes
'Zenith Red'

Common Name: = Marigold.
Good performer. Rapidly spreading plant that is constantly in flower. Full healthy plants with abundant flowers. Easy to deadhead. Color description is misleading, flowers only have a tinge of red when they first open.
Verbena
bonariensis

(additional image)

Common Name: = Purpletop Vervain (USDA).
A self seeding annual that is a must have for the butterfly garden. Tall, airy stalks are great for the back of the annual garden or as a "filler" between other tall plants.
Verbena
'Quartz Blue'

(additional image)

Common Name: = Verbena.
Good performer. Excellent color. Plant spreads nicely. Later in the season, however, spider mites affected appearance of the leaves and lack of constant deadheading caused flowers to be more sparse.
Verbena
'Quartz Red'

Good performer. Excellent color. Plant spreads nicely. Later in the season, however, spider mites affected appearance of the leaves and lack of constant deadheading caused flowers to be more sparse.

Good performer. Good color. Healthy spreading plant. A Profusion Zinnia is a must have plant in our garden (other colors are available).
