|Athyrium niponicum 'Pewter Lace'|
6/09/2010 Athyrium niponicum 'Pewter Lace'. is greatly over-rated. Fronds mostly extend horizontal, not upright. Typical height 8 inches, but sometimes only grows to 4 inches. We have grown this fern for several years, 2004 through 2010.
All Japanese Painted ferns display an attractive reddish and silver tint fronds. In our observations, the burgundy color is essentially indistinguisable from an ordinary Japanese Painted fern. Without our field notes and bed maps, we would have a difficult time identifying this cultivar among a mixed bed of Japanese Painted ferns. This cultivar is nothing special. B32.
