Tropical Ferns
Houseplants - Over the years, we have attempted to grow several tropical ferns in our outdoor shadehouse during summer (USDA Zone 5). All were overwintered indoors. These ferns were grown in 4 to 6 inch clay pots layered at the base with long fiber sphagnum moss, center filled with 50% pine bark and 50% Fafard 52 Mix, and top layered with long fiber sphagnum moss. This 'moss sandwich' prevented mix from spilling out during watering. Outdoors, plants were watered with well water (290 TDS) from the garden hose. Indoors, plants were watered by dipping into a bucket of RO water (10 TDS).
