Big Bend, Wisconsin
Frost Dates
Frost: It is typical to have a frost event in southeastern Wisconsin in early May, and again in early October. This results in approximately 160 frost free days of growing season in Big Bend, Wisconsin (USDA Zone 5).

Killing Freeze: While water freezes at 32 degrees, exposure to this temperature does not damage all plants. Many plants are tolerant of a few overnight hours with temperatures as low as 28 degrees. Killing freeze occurs when temperatures reach below 24 degrees. Nearly all soft tissue plants are permanently damaged at this temperature.

    Spring Frost: Big Bend, Wisconsin
  • May 4 (50% chance of frost)
  • May 19 (10% chance of frost)
    Fall Frost: Big Bend, Wisconsin
  • September 26 (10% chance of frost)
  • October 6 (50% chance of frost)

Preferred
Soil pH
Grow with Potatoes
Garden Comments
5.0-6.0Potatoes
Lower pH reduces potato soil disease. We add elemental sulfur (preferred), aluminum sulfate, magnesium sulfate, iron sulfate, and milled sphagnum peat moss to soil. To 50 square feet of raised bed garden we add 7 pounds of elemental sulfur and 3/4 cubic yard of milled sphagnum peat moss. Retest soil pH each year.
6.0-6.5Eggplant
7.39/2/2009 soil test from garden, pH meter
NoteAvoid growing with squash, pumpkin, cucumber, and tomatoes.

Preferred
Soil pH
Other Vegetable Beds
Garden Comments
7.2Cauliflower and Broccoli
Low pH causes wilting in these plants from a soil fungus. Do not grow in acidic garden.
6.0-7.0Brussels sprouts
7.39/2/2009 soil test from garden, pH meter
NoteSo, while it is universally recommended in all garden bulletins that "potatoes like cabbage family companions", there is a difference in their preferred soil acidity of as much as 100 times!!! (that is pH 5 versus pH7 is 100 times more acidic).
