Neighboring Area Weeds
State of Wisconsin

The State of Wisconsin, Noxious Weed Statute 66.0407(1)(b), lists 3 plants: Canada Thistle, Field Bindweed, and Leafy Spurge. All towns, villages, and cities in our area include these three plants in their local noxious weed ordinance. Further mention of these plants is excluded from the following discussion and table for sake of brevity.

None of the area towns, villages, or cities list plants by scientific name, only by common name. Some of the common names mentioned are not known to the University of Wisconsin Herbarium, and their exact identity can not be determined. Other names used are actually groups of plants like, 'Thistles' and 'Harmful Barberry'. These groups do not define the specific plants that fall into these classifications. I have appended a scientific name to the common name listed in the ordinance using my best judgement (any errors or omissions in plant identifications are mine).

The Weed Commissioner for the Town of Vernon has made determinations about which of these plants should have considerations for the Town.
Proposed Town of Vernon status of plants:
  • Yes - indicates that this plant should hold a status of Noxious, Nuisance, or Restricted weed in the Town.
  • Maybe - indicates that this plant should not hold a status of Noxious, Nuisance, or Restricted weed in the Town at this time. But the plant is worthy of concern and future change in status is possible.
  • No - indicates that this plant should not hold a status of Noxious, Nuisance, or Restricted weed in the Town. There is no merit for status.
  • (blank) - indicates that this plant has not been throughly considered due to an ambiguous common name referencing this plant. Once the scientific name is agreed upon, and the identity of this plant becomes known, then the plant may be worthy of through review.
